Don’t close the door on 2013 just yet!

Ah November.  The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting longer.  Here in Calgary the temperatures are also dropping and the scratch scratch scratch of ice scrapers on car windshields is a more familiar morning tune than the long gone song birds.

November.  Some argue that it isn’t April that is the cruellest month, but November.

T.S. Elliot calls it “sombre November

Sir Walter Scott describes the “November’s sky is chill and drear.”

To Emily Dickinson, “November always seemed to [be] the Norway of the year.”

Thomas Hood just says No!

No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease,
No comfortable feel in any member –
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,
No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds –
November!

Geez … doesn’t exactly lend itself to inspiration, does it?

If anything, November, in all its bleakness, has a lot of people thinking that it’s the end of 2013 and already moving onto wishful thinking for 2014.

But whoa minute la!  Not so fast! There’s still stuff to do!

I love this one excerpt from Rainer Maria Riilke:

Whoever has no house now will not build one anymore.
Whoever is alone now will remain so for a long time,
will stay up, read, write long letters,
and wander the avenues, up and down,
restlessly, while the leaves are blowing.

O.K. sounds like a downer – but look again.  Maybe he’s just saying don’t start something new right now.  And … who doesn’t love the idea of staying up late, writing letters, wandering around the neighbourhood for inspiration?

Doesn’t that sound hopeful?

Brilliant Lucy Maude Montgomery shares this bit:

But there is always a November space after the leaves have fallen when she felt it was almost indecent to intrude on the woods…for their glory terrestrial had departed and their glory celestial of spirit and purity and whiteness had not yet come upon them.

November is more than just a pause, then.  It is a time to stop, for a just a moment, then, do.  It’s a call to action!

Yes, it is past mid-November.  We still have about 45 days left to THIS year!  A lot can get done in 45 days!

This is definitely not the time to put 2013 to sleep, this is the time to finish strong!

In this November pause, before the busy of the December holiday season, take a little survey and become conscious of what needs to be done so that you can finish 2013 in a triumphant way.

Let the vision from the previous 10 months guide your focus and ask,

What needs my attention so that I can finish this year strong?

What do I need to have/what do I need to do to remain energized for the last run?

What goals or projects did I really want to get on this year that need my attention?

Don’t shut the door or even cast judgement on the year that still is.  Carry on and finish with a flourish.

  • I absolutely love this post. I’m guilty of falling into that November/December rut, wanting a fresh year to start. Why wait for New Years to make a failed previous resolution. Start today!
Thank you for the reminder that no matter the time or month, you can always find a way to accomplish the things you want in life! Love it!

  • I agree. 2013 has not been kind and I like that there is still time to finish strong. Thank you for the reminder to be present.
